To
install additional RAM, your computer must have empty slots available, or, the
existing memory is removable/replaceable. Follow the instructions in the
manufacturer’s reference manual that came with your PC, or it may also be
found and downloaded from the manufacturer’s web site.
Here are some general guidelines for installing a memory module:

Turn off computer. Disconnect
other accessories like monitor, printers, modems, and external drives.

Before opening your computer,
wear a commercial grounding strap to prevent ESD
Damage. If you don’t have
one, rid yourself of static electricity by touching a metal part of the
computer case while it is still plugged in.

Using an appropriate
screwdriver, remove the computer cover.

Locate the the memory
expansion slots. If necessary, remove the existing module by pushing the
retaining clips away from the edges of the module then gently pulling the
module toward you. As much as possible, always handle modules by the edges.

Remove the new module from its
antistatic packaging.

Open the retaining clips and
insert the new module into the first free slot. Refer to the
manufacturer’s manual to determine the socket numbers. Make sure that
notches on the module line with the keys in the expansion socket. Do not
force in the module as this may damage it. Modules for desktops/servers are generally pushed
straight into sockets in an upright position.
Laptop modules or SODIMMs, on the other hand, are inserted in a
slanted position, usually at 30-degree angle. The retaining clips must lock the module to ensure that
the module is firmly seated into the socket.

Replace the computer cover and
reconnect the power cable.

Boot the computer.
Most systems would automatically recognize the new memory, but there
are some that would require additional configuration.
